SOLAR VEGETATION INTELLIGENCE
Detect Vegetation Before
It Shades Your Panels
Multispectral drone scouting, NDVI analytics and targeted intervention for utility-scale solar farms. AiRotor Labs flags active chlorophyll 2-3 weeks before vegetation is visible to the eye — so you mow only what matters, recover 1.5-3% annual yield, and cut vegetation spend by 45%.
Vegetation Is a Silent Tax on Solar Yield
Grass, weeds and scrub cost solar O&M operators in four ways — most of them invisible until it's too late.
Shading Losses
Grass and weeds shade the lower edge of modules first. Even 5% partial shading on a string can cut its output by 25-30% because of series-connected cells.
Hotspots & Degradation
Shaded cells run in reverse bias and overheat. Chronic hotspots accelerate module degradation and can void performance warranties.
Fire & Compliance Risk
Dry vegetation near combiner boxes and inverters is a fire hazard and a common audit finding for O&M contracts.
Blind, Reactive Mowing
Sites mow the entire farm on a fixed calendar — paying for acres that don't need it while hot zones regrow between cycles.
By the Time You Can See It, You're Already Losing Money
Plants glow in near-infrared long before they look green. Multispectral NDVI flags active chlorophyll at the seedling stage — giving you a 2-3 week head start on intervention.
2-3 Weeks Earlier
Multispectral NDVI flags active chlorophyll long before plants reach module height.
Centimetre-Level Maps
Every flagged patch is geolocated to the exact table and row.
Trend, Not Snapshot
Repeat flights build a growth-rate model per zone — we predict where it will breach first.
The Science: Plants Glow in Near-Infrared
450 nmGreen
560 nmRed
650 nmRed-Edge
730 nmNIR
840 nm
Healthy vegetation strongly absorbs red light for photosynthesis and strongly reflects near-infrared. Bare soil, gravel and PV glass do neither. The contrast between the two bands isolates living plants — even sparse seedlings a few centimetres tall.
Values range from -1 to +1. Soil ≈ 0.1, stressed grass ≈ 0.3, vigorous weeds ≥ 0.6. Airotor alerts trigger at zone-calibrated thresholds.
Scan. Analyse. Intervene — Only Where Needed
The Airotor method in three steps.
Multispectral Scan
Airotor drone flies an automated grid at 60-80 m, capturing 5-band imagery (Blue, Green, Red, Red-Edge, NIR) plus thermal.
NDVI Analytics
Imagery is stitched into an orthomosaic and converted to NDVI & red-edge indices. AI segments vegetation from panels, roads and soil.
Targeted Action
Growth zones are ranked by risk. Crews get GPS work orders for only the affected rows. A verification flight closes the loop.
Airotor AG-1 — Built and Manufactured In-House
From Detection to Prediction — Stop It Before It Grows
Each flight sharpens the per-zone growth forecast for the next season.
Flight 1 · Day 0
Baseline NDVI map. Micro-zones with residual root systems and moisture pockets identified.
Flight 2 · Day 14
Growth-rate per zone computed. Fast risers flagged amber; herbicide/trim work orders issued for 7% of site area.
Flight 3 · Day 28
Treated zones verified regression-free. Two new emergent patches caught at seedling stage.
Outcome: vegetation never reaches module height — zero shading events, zero emergency mows.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does NDVI detect vegetation before it's visible?
Healthy plants absorb red light for photosynthesis but strongly reflect near-infrared (NIR) light. NDVI — the ratio (NIR - Red) / (NIR + Red) — detects active chlorophyll even in seedlings just a few centimetres tall, 2-3 weeks before they're visible to the human eye or RGB cameras. Bare soil scores ~0.1, stressed grass ~0.3, and vigorous weeds ≥0.6.
How much does vegetation management cost with Airotor's targeted approach?
Our clients see 45% lower vegetation management spend compared to blanket mowing programs. Instead of mowing 100% of the site on a fixed calendar, crews only treat the 5-10% of zones flagged by our NDVI analytics. The drone scanning cost pays for itself within the first mowing cycle through reduced crew hours and herbicide usage.
How often do you fly during growth season?
During active growth season (monsoon and post-monsoon in India), we fly fortnightly. This captures growth-rate per micro-zone and triggers work orders before vegetation reaches module height. Outside growth season, monthly monitoring flights track residual root systems and new germination. The flight schedule adapts to your site's specific vegetation pressure.
What equipment do you use for vegetation scanning?
We fly our in-house Airotor AG-1 multirotor equipped with a 5-band multispectral sensor (Blue, Green, Red, Red-Edge, NIR at 3-5 cm/px GSD) plus a radiometric thermal camera on a 3-axis gimbal. Flights are fully automated at 60-80 m AGL with RTK positioning for repeatable centimetre-accurate overlays across multiple flights.
Can you manage the mowing crews too?
Yes. Our Full-Stack engagement includes Airotor-managed trim crews who receive GPS-tagged work orders directly from our analytics platform. We handle herbicide application and mechanical trimming for only the flagged zones, then fly a verification scan to confirm clearance — backed by an SLA-level zero-shading guarantee.
What deliverables do I receive after each flight?
After each flight you receive: a calibrated NDVI orthomosaic, a risk-ranked zone list with growth severity scores, GPS work orders in GeoJSON + PDF format for ground crews, a trend comparison against previous flights, and a full audit trail with timestamps. All data is accessible via our cloud dashboard or exported for your CMMS.
